"Audrey T.'s Review Of Universal Cafe (4/5)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-11 10:42:13

Universal Cafe is a located on the quiet- and cleaner- side of the Mission district. In fact it feels nothing like you're in the Mission. Which to me is a good thing. I have only tried Universal's brunch menu so I can say nothing for the dinner served here. While the ingredients used to prepare our meal were without a doubt very fresh the dishes themselves were just A-Ok (as designated by the three stars). Dishes were also on the pricey side. I have to agree with Yelper Kevan M with regards to the service. Very ho-hum and un-enthused for such a busy cafe. Sunday Noon (Mother's Day) we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table but it was definitely worth it! I loved the fact that the coffees are self-served while you wait. We also like the fact that they use organic produces and the freshness of their dishes reflect that. Toasted Banana bread and potato with herb are must-have sides. Service was friendly and non-intrusive. Bill came out to be about $20 per person which is very reasonable for the quality. I've been having the best brunch-streak - there was only a 10 min wait on Sunday at 10am. Parking was a breeze too (hallelujah) and our waiter was cheerful and flamboyant like every other well-groomed guy eating on the patio. Very un-Mission-like. While I was unimpressed with the overall variety. I was impressed by the number of healthy options. In fact the flatbread was a little too healthy. I need my carbs chewy thick and smothered in cholesterol and cheese. The lamb sandwich however was too fatty-gamey. What made this place a 4 was the banana bread and the mozzarella eggs - WOW - can't wait to try the pumpkin scone! My name is Jess C and I'm a carb-aholic. I was completely prepared to be underwhelmed by Universal Cafe. After all this level of hype usually results in disappointment. But.. sorry. Brunch really kicked serious ass. They had me at pumpkin doughnuts. Then as if that wasn't enough temptation the doughnuts were served with.. wait for it.. brandied fruit mascarpone. And yes it tasted as good as it sounds. The doughnuts were exceptional crunchy on the outside and soft and crumbly inside. While I sipped my honeyed tea and felt all was right with the sunny world outside our main courses arrived. My soft scrambled eggs with wild mushrooms and mixed greens was delicious and the acme toast on the side was fresh fresh fresh. My husband couldn't get enough of his dish - a concoction of poached eggs perched atop a cornmeal biscuit with vinegared onions and sausage gravy. I can speak for the onions being awesome - and it is pretty hard to get me to gush about onions. Overall. Fabulosa. Prices are sky high but whatever. Went to this small but busy place for lunch today. Ordered the Cod with butternut squash and spinach which was great but the portion was kind of small. Desserts were good but on the pricey side. The menu changes daily which is always a plus. Unfortunately the place was very loud and I couldn't here anything my coworkers were saying. I'd go back though but probably would try to sit outside. I've been here twice. The atmosphere is nice - it's a refined industrial interior. The restaurant itself is on a quiet residential street in the Mission. My first visit was for dinner. The pumpkin soup was super tasty the pasta was excellent the salmon was interesting. The wine list is small but respectable. Service was great! 5 stars! My second visit was for brunch. The food was just OK especially for the price. The service was kind of crappy and lacked enthusiasm. Overall. 3 stars. Average the two scores out and you get 4 stars! If there were ever a time to throw off the shackles of mediocrity and sift through the detritus of mainstream culture to find a gem of meaning the time is now and the place is Universal Cafe's sunny patio with some kind of arty deconstructed brunch dish and a frosty Lillet. Just pick a day when there's a lot of other shit going on in the city and everyone is elsewhere. Get down on some free coffee. Brunch here was awesome. We arrived before the crowds -- just barely (10 am on a Sat. SF crowds arrive at 10:30..). Mimosas were delicious. I had the poached eggs on focaccia -- it was yummy. I liked the open kitchen and the general feel of the place - hip but approachable. I'd go there again for a good meal with friends. had my first time brunch here today and it fulfilled most of my expectations.. wait: put our names down for two with about 6-8 names ahead of us grabbed a cup of their free coffee strolled along outside and then got seated about 10 minutes later the wait was really nothing at all.. service: the food took a little bit longer than i thought it should have but overall the onsite staff was friendly and welcomingfood quality: food was good! french toast was delicious and so were the soft scrambled eggs.. their menu selection for breakfast was more on the gourmet side in other words you won't find classic 2 egg breakfasts omelettes here however you won't be disappointed by the quality price: not the cheapest brunch cafe around-- so the $$ fits the description just right ended up being around $18/person overall cool and quaint little spot to hit up for sunday brunch... I know it sounds awfully "pot and kettle" of me to say so but I've never eaten here because there always seems to be such a long wait. I didn't realize until today that they serve lunch on weekdays.. it was a gorgeous SF day so this seemed like a great time to try out "the competition" in the brunch world. It was surprisingly comfortable inside considering the hot weather-- the marble tables felt wonderfully cool under my arms. My table had a pasta dish w/ tapenade steak frites a sloppy joe and a romaine salad. All definitely above par for California cuisine if not as innovative as some of the newer places are these days. Service was professional prompt and warm. It's loud and I mean "WHAT?" loud and that was only half full... I can't imagine the volume on a Friday night. But I'd go back if I was in the 'hood. I'm a big fan of the long lunch and sadly my work neighborhood is a little lacking in nice restaurants that don't hurry you out. We have the Slow Club. Circolo um. that's it really. And this place. I went in today and had a great plate of linguine with an olive tapenade. I sat there by myself and read my book about baseball purists and wasn't bothered by anybody. The space gets really great light so if you can't sit outside you won't mind too much. If I lived in San Francisco which it some point is bound to happen. I would be a brunching lady of the bay as long as this restaurant is in business. Best brunch experience ever. I was concerned about the wait after reading a number of reviews on Yelp but the wait was no more than 15 minutes and well worth it. This place is situated in a fairly residential neighborhood in the Mission a bit off the beaten path. It is an adorable little restaurant with a charming outdoor seating area. My dining companion and I sat at the counter. A word to the wise you have to go inside and write your name down on a list attached to a clip board sitting on the counter in order to be seated. Now for the most important part the food.. mmmm. I am still dreaming of the food. I ordered the Pumpkin French Toast. Garlic Roasted Potatoes and a Pomegranate Bellini. I was in love at first bite. The French toast was grilled to perfection and topped with a sweet pumpkin puree (tasted like pumpkin pie but lighter) fresh whipped cream and a dusting of pumpkin seeds. It was the best culinary concoction I have ever experienced. It was sweet enough that you don't even have to put syrup on it although that didn't stop me from indulging. The potatoes... MMM good! The perfect amount of garlic and herbs. No need for ketchup on these bad boys. I tried and much better without. Pomegranate Bellini was good too! Could have a used a bit more pomegranate but was still delicious. My idea of a perfect Saturday really. If you haven't been here go now! Went here on a weekend for a quick little brunch and was delightfully surprised by the quality of food. I was sort of expecting the usual diner fare but the menu was versatile and most of it was organic. I guess that explains my $6 orange juice eh?The french toast was like any other diner french toast with the exception of the delicious fruit that topped it off. The girlfriend had the croque madam which I give my highest rating of 5 heart attacks. An added bonus was being able to watch all the action from the bar stools which made me further realize that I would last a short 5 minutes in the food business. I have a hard enough time making my own french toast much less a hungry morning crowd. Expect a bit of a wait when you get there but in my opinion its worth it. An absolutely amazing meal. The braised pork chop was heaven! With a cool Cape Cod sort of feel to this place nestled in the lower mission this open layout exudes comfort. White wash walls ceiling fans and an open floor-to-ceiling window entrance this place is heaven to my eyes. On a nice day take advantage of their outdoor seating in front of the restaurant. If not let the ceiling fan breeze over you as you enjoy yourself. Our server was excellent and was very helpful which is a plus of course. The only gripe I had was the banging of dishes right behind me in the small kitchen/washing area at the back of the restaurant. If they were able to conceal that a little better to isolate the sound a 5 star rating they would receive. A must-go-to restaurant! Wonderful food out on the patio - sunny day good atmosphere and company too. Bonus that we didn't even have to wait for a table (!) Had the chicken on foccacia (although the menu changes would totally order this again) with ice tea. Service was good so no complaints apart from the health care "tax" or whatever which is a little weird since the food isn't terribly cheap. Will definitely go back though to try some of their other meals - heard it's consistently good food which is what's important. Wish I could give this 3.5. It was good. I had the flatbread pizza. He had some sandwich. They were both good. The service was good. The atmosphere was really cute. It just wasn't anything really special. I might feel differently if we got to sit outside. Or maybe we caught them on a "boring day"--I think they change the menu daily. I'm just going to have to try it again. Awesome food with an awesome atmosphere (minus the douchey-marina girls sitting next to us getting their nasty hair all up in our faces... Yeah you girls are so NOT hot). Anyway very lovely place however. I cannot and will not pay $17 for another simple lunch (seriously. 1 appetizer + diet coke = $17). I'll more than likely come back again because like I said it's a really cute place with some tasty foods... However don't expect to see me here all the time... Only for a treat from time to time! I love finding great brunch spots and this is one of them! It was my birthday and I'm with my favorite girls! Everyone had a different dish and we had a great time the only thing was they kept forgetting our coffee but since it was my birthday I didn't even care that much. We had so much fun! Top Brunch Spot! I met some friends here for brunch on Sunday morning. The parking was easy the wait for four of us was less than 20 minutes (they only take reservations for dinner) and the food was delicious and high quality. It is a little pricey and I did not love the sole sandwich (was decent but nothing special) so that is why I am only giving four stars but with the easy parking outdoor seating and the sunny neighborhood it probably deserves at least 4 1/2 stars. I had a great brunch experience here a few weekends ago. I wake up semi-early on the weekends and I've found that some places I go to open up at 10am. It's nice that universal opens up earlier than that. It was a sunny and warm morning and I enjoyed my brunch outside. I got to taste their fruit and yogurt plate as well as their beef brisket hash both delicious. My coffee never got to empty. Service here is awesome. The restaurant is not in the middle of shops and other places to eat so there's not much people-watching to do but parking is easier than other busy neighborhoods. Very nice brunch spot though there was a long-ish wait by the time I left. The food was awesome... I had the chicken sandwich others had the cod (fish) and beef brisket. I get a chance to tried out the items that we ordered.... All of them were delicious... It is a little bit expensive. Keep in mind that they added $1 per person for some kind of health care 'tax' plus 20% tips for party of 5 or more. Good service good food. I definitely would come back for more. I had read about Universal but what really made me resolve to go was an episode of that Bay Area public television show in which that full-of-crap faux-food-journalist woman chats with random jerk-faces and morons from San Francisco about their favorite restaurant in the city. On this particular episode the least jerky-face and moronic guest spotlighted Universal as his favorite restaurant. It looked charming so we hiked over to Bryant one morning (2pm) for brunch after our cursory weekend morning walk down Valencia in pursuit of something interesting. I usually abstain from highish-end brunches because I'd rather save my dollars for meals that don't consist of... an omelette. But man was it worth it. I think I ate pork chops and some kind of corn fritter -- everything on my plate was exceptional. Dinner last night was strong -- the menu was exciting and all dishes were tasty. Probably not on par with Range but not far off. And the place is just so gosh darn charming. Call me a naive tourist yuppy if you must but to me Universal legitimately feels more like a "neighborhood" place than it's like-minded competitors. My only gripe -- and this seems to be a theme with me -- is about the wine glasses. Our waiter was a generous pour but the glasses were so small there was no room left to sssswirl. Oh my how gauche! Wow the food here is great. I heard a lot of hype about the tasty-ness that is Universal Cafe before I came here and was still blown away. I had the buttermilk biscuits with poached eggs and smothered in a white gravy with bits of sausage. The biscuits were also topped with roasted bell peppers and onion. Everything about this worked. The biscuits were fluffy and the gravy was to die for. I wasn't expecting the the bell peppers but even those went with the other ingredients. The couple samples I had of my friends Indian breakfast was equally impressive. The bloody marys aren't bad either. I'm not likely to haul myself to San Francisco for brunch very often but I'm sure I can be talked into going back here in the future. Scene: Right now it's 7:16am on Monday morning and I am on Day 2.5 of a Juice Fast. I just downed some tomato juice laced with gingeroot. Not Happy. I armed myself with a calming Visualization/Basic Relaxation Sequence to temporarily relieve myself of this pain. What is That I HEAR?! Oh yea! Our table is ready! Soon I SEE a big mess of French Toast... wait I SMELL the berries..... French Toast with Berry Coulis? and is that Maple Syrup? Of Course It Is! I FEEL the syrup oozing out of my mouth deftly picked up by my napkin in my left hand. The TASTE of Absolute Sugar intermittantly flavored with sips of black as the night coffee. Anyone care to join me when this jkfdj!!** juice fast is over? A lot of people seem to be reluctant to order chicken at nice restaurants. They say it's a cop out. I could make that at home there must something more interesting on the menu etc. Well. I can say with complete confidence that Universal Cafe's roast chicken is no cop out. And while I suppose there might be something more interesting on the menu if you say you can make chicken like this at your house I am coming over to make you prove it. Unless you're annoying or your place smells like cat urine. Then I probably won't come over but you still get my meaning. I had to send back the lamb. I really tried but I couldn't find one good bite on the whole plate. This place has such a nice interior and a great bar to sit order and eat at. I gone back a couple times since my last visit and the food has gotten worse. I'm going to give this place a few months before I brave the retry. And even then it'll just be baby steps.(a k a. No meat -- FYI- that blows cause I love meat). Perhaps the staff at Universal hasn't heard of the old adage; don't rest on your laurels. Over the years I have been to Universal several times for brunch on the weekends. The food and service has always good.. until today. The food was still great (can't beat that banana nut bread) but the service has gone way down hill. The hostess and the two servers who waited on us were awful. It was as if they couldn't wait to get us out of there. Two extra chairs at our table were added removed and adjust at least 6 times while we sat there (I suppose to accommodate other customers). The check was brought to us before we even asked for it. And no one ever came by after our food was brought out to see if we needed anything else (a coffee refill would have bee nice!). I know it's always busy there but come on it's brunch. It's supposed to be relaxing. There are plenty of other places in SF with good brunches and much better service. I suggest that you try somewhere else besides Universal. It's no longer worth the price. Oh. My. God. This was seriously delicious brunch! My sister was looking for a good brunch place for us to try out which she may not be able to get to easily on muni (to take advantage of my vehicle). First tip I can give you is to get there early. We were there at 10:30am and when we left there were a ton of people hoping for a table to open up and hovering and drooling over the outside tables. I liked the very industrial sort of look and feel of the restaurant inside and things were definitely moving! I took a little peek at my neighbor's dishes to get an idea of what I should order and the first thing that caught my eye was the buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy with (i think!) poached eggs. SO DELICIOUS! My friend also ordered the french toast with strawberries and ricotta cheese. She thought it was simply divine and wants to come back to this cafe all the time now! i love this place for brunch but sometimes i forget about it cause it's out in the middle of nowhere surprisingly enough though it's often crowded and there's a wait came here last weekend with some girlfriends and orginally planned on going to slow club but i suggested universal cafe partly cause the weather was so nice and slow club can be a bit dark and dim but i also think the food is better! you can order drinks while you're waiting and drink them on the sidewalk we waited about half an hour and then were sat at a table near the door so it was almost like sitting outside we started with the seasonal fruit plate and toasted banana bread yum and yum not only is the seasonal fruit plate just fresh and yummy but it comes with toast that has some fromage blanc honey and cinnamon on it (and i don't usually like honey or cheese so you know it's gotta be good...) plus toasted banana bread? nuff said although we were tempted to get the chocolate cinnamon donuts with vanilla cream why didn't we get them?! i got the hearts of romaine salad with smoked trout perfect for what i was feeling it was so fresh and crisp the dressing was nice and light with some yellow cherry tomatoes and the smoked trout salad was so tasty and served on toasted baguette i loved the salty crispiness of the crostini my friend got the poached eggs with polenta and piperade which as also quite tasty (again not a fan of polenta but still yummy) and croque madame which i didn't try but looked delicious and our fourth got the french toast which i heard was delicious but i didn't try any myself my only small gripe and it's not even a huge deal although i guess prevents me from giving 5 stars is that the service is just ok our server did seem really busy so maybe that was part of it but really just took our order and dropped the check not that we needed much more but it would've been nice if she checked on us at least once just very efficient which isn't necessarily a bad thing.... After hearing many rave reviews. I finally made to the Universal Cafe and I'm so glad I did! We arrived on a Saturday at about 12:30pm and were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately. The food was delicious (I had a refreshing ginger lemonade and the tasty scrambed eggs with pesto and my friend had the amazing blueberry french toast) the atmosphere was pleasant and the service was friendly. Universal definitely lived up to its reputation and I will certainly be back! I adore Universal Cafe. I love that it's off the beaten path in a pretty random location and that it's laid back but it delivers high quality inventive absolutely delicious brunches and dinners that are tough to beat for the price. The scrambles are simple yet flavorful and filling my BF wouldn't shut up about the french toast for DAYS after he first had it and they have the best flank steak I've ever had. They also have an excellent drink menu and wine list and update their menu daily. There's not a lot of options but surely something to please everyone and everything sounds so good. I'm kind of glad it's so short or else I'd never be able to make up my mind! The outdoor seating is nice on a non-windy day and you can actually park nearby fairly easily. Highly highly recommended. Ah if only this place had all you can drink mimosas to make it a NY style brunch then.. it'd be perfect. The wait was quite long but we put our name in then went to fetch a cup of coffee from Coffee Bar. Brunch was sooo yummy and service was great also. We started with the Banana Bread topped with whipped cream cheese which suited us perfectly as a starter for three people. We then dived into our main dishes... I had a grilled flatbread pizza that had eggplant mozzarella and ricotta cheese on it. It was amazingly delicious and more than I could eat. I'd get it to share with someone next time or get it as an appetizer. All in all a fabulous place (don't forget to check out the bathroom it had a sweet drawing in there)! My one visit here was not terribly inspiring as is oft said. I wanted to love it but... We popped in for brunch it was on the early side so as busy as they were there was not too much of a wait. I mellowed out with the 9 dollar mimosa* and listened to the cacophony of voices bouncing off the walls. I tried not to eavesdrop (nothing juicy to hear anyway ;) but I was sitting virtually shoulder to shoulder with the people on either side of me along the wall so it was difficult; I could tell they were trying to block us out as well. The old man had ordered the french toast and I some special with eggs polenta and mushrooms. Long story short I found his french toast dry with virtually no egg penetration into the bread and my special was honestly too soupy and bland. Overall I was disappointed after reading so many good things about the french toast and brunch in our case nothing really stood out to encourage me to make it a brunch destination again. I like to be fair though so perhaps I'll try something else next time or return for dinner. Until the time I can reevaluate I'll say that my estimation of this popular spot is that it is universally okay.*What is with the cost of mimosas nowadays you'd think a little glass of juice with some sparkling wine would actually cost less then a giant tumbler of the hand squoze stuff.. My cross-country pal. Mimi forced me to eat here. She literally made me do her bidding against my will and I am considering pressing charges. Justice served she will end up in the pokey on kidnapping charges. While in captivity she also made me eat really delicious toasted banana bread with creamed cheese. And then she coerced me into eating one of the best BBQ beef sandwiches I've ever had to put in my mouth. It was an amazingly good brunch. I am scarred for life.. or at least spoiled forever. This is my new favorite brunch spot on the planet. But be warned the wait was not short. You will no doubt wile away the 30-45 minutes you will have to wait sitting on the pavement outside the restaurant. Bring a good friend to keep you company. Preferably one with a history of kidnapping and verbal abuse.

"Audrey T.'s Review Of Bossa Nova (4/5)" posted by ~Ray

Half a block away from bring home the bacon and super cheap mojitos and caiprinis makes for the ideal happy hour. And the liquor definately flows the drinks I had were strong. I've yet to try the food but no disbelieve I ordain. I love that this displace is non-descript no loud obnoxious sign on the outside just a simple tasteful metal coat by the door. I ate here. Can't say I was really happy about the happy hour. The $5 cairpinhnas didn't undergo much booze in them. The food was good. The large prices small portion concept would have worked exceed for that fast I've been thinking about. The service was decent too. Can't seem to remember a much more about it good or bad. Glad I went once but won't be going back. Tiny little fit. Easy to walk right by because the sign for the displace is right by the door about the coat of a earn size piece of cover. Two man band at the door. Happy hour til 7:30. Good caipirhnas. Strong. Or maybe I'm just weak sauce. come up. I experience I'm weak sauce. After 1.5 caipirhnas. I was feeling very good. I usually stick to whiskey neat or on the rocks but it was worth varying my drink for the caipirhnas. It's also a restaurant but I was only here for drinks during happy hour. Seemed desire a nice place for dinner if you can get a align table. Four stars cuz I saw bear on their menu. Next time I'm coming for dinner and trying out the lamb. this is as many of my pals said-- the super-sexy-time. 100% guaranteed panty-dropper date spot or as Leif so eloquently put it- "ameliorate for playing footsie and eyefucking."so romantic as you enter to organic bossa nova music being performed (daily from 7-9 i think) be a narrow-charming dining lay that holds a communal sitting area in the lay and is wonderful for hint parties (thx for introducing this spot Connie!!!) or just to mingle with other patrons candles used to be the primary source of light (ala cathedral-style) which was dramatic and beautiful but it seems like there was some safety air cause the last time i came through it was much brighter due to regular lights being on.. though this could be a good thing especially for you beer-goggle-wearing fools!all of the dishes are unbelievable! you undergo to select the ceviche lamb skewers and mussels -- the goat cheese is also a must =) as for the drinks.. ameliorate for the ladies you can't go do by with the mango caipirinha or house mojito-- flavorful but strong like bull the waiter function can differ but the bartenders and Gilberto are always welcoming and analyse in regularly with genuine care in how your experience is musicians that move back and forth it here are the cherry on top.. i have heard beautifully artistic originals along with renditions of :seu jorge. CeUbebel gilberto. kochirakosou =) When I'm not getting cantankerous with my pants shed to an ankle I rather desire to frequent places like this. However this is not to imply I pay gratuitous hours in the displace levels of the Civic center Bart displace grappling at the likes of some woman I can't quite render my wingspan around - but I would very much desire to imply that I am one with a personality drenched in gentlemanly restraint and manners that delight. Moving on. We bring home the bacon at the little red door in celebration of a kid and his plus one (in the regard of age). Not one to sit lightly with the perils of people. I murder a corner of margaritas - taking some arbitrary pleasure in my ability to disguise a drunken wish with a wordy pour. "margarita love on the rocks - no salt cazadoras silver thanks." Six drink and I can comfort whiff my sobriety him and his neurotic vow - I idle my way outside and whip out a fag. And then it hits. I'm a rolling sing girl in tube socks and a spread-eagled grimace - continue to the pavement and we're laughing at stars. act me home dear. Caipirinhas. Caipirinhas. Caipirinhas. And what hot waitresses! Man those brazilian chicks alter me move. I don't change surface compassionate what they look desire I just like to comprehend them speak. If I sound like a pig who cares. I'm telling it like it is y'all... The way they uttered the syllables of my new favorite word "caipirinha" in their native play really had a study impact on my hormones. I was weak in the knees all night. Or was that the pot cookie that I ate in go across to SOMA? I just don't experience anymore. The lines between what is medicate induced and what is reality are becoming more and more blurred. But I digress. The place was polish and sexy. The atmosphere was lively and bustling. I would have liked to hear a little more of the following from the dj:1. Seu Jorge2. Astrud Gilberto3. Ceu.4. Antonio Carlos JobimStill the music was sultry and soulful - I ain't complaining at all. Plus the moderate volume made it possible for me to confess my sins to all my friends. Yes. I have had impure thoughts about certain members of the waitstaff here.. yes I am in general impure... My celebrate ordered lots of little plates of food and also several desserts: They were all delicious but let's face it. I was there for the Caipirinhas. And the eye candy. So I walked into Bossa Nova with 3 friends at 5:30 on Friday for some happy hour snacks and drinks. There were several populate at the bar and almost every single table in the restaurant was empty. I had high hopes for the place having read several great reviews on bark and just having watched Anthony Bourdain feed drink caipirinhas on a recent Sao Paulo episode of "No Reservations". We were greeted upon entry by a waitress who tried to pack us like the proverbial canned fish into the crowded bar area. I looked pointedly around me at the 10 or so completely empty tables (and there are only about 12 tables be in the joint) and she noticed my look. The following dialog ensued:Waitress: Those tables are reserved for diners. Me: Well we're planning to order some food. Waitress: come up are you planning to order dinner?Me: What qualifies as dinner?Waitress: (sighs at me) Let me just go talk to the entertain and see if there is anything he can do for you. So we stood around in the empty restaurant waiting for about 10 minutes for the entertain to be. I wondered should I communicate him as "Your Honor"? I am not familiar with the mechanics of negotiating for a table in an alter restaurant. Meanwhile I looked at the menu and noted that had I come here to officially "dine" there would not have been a hit entree that I as a vegetarian could have ordered. At measure the host appeared and told us that while he'd like to give us a table the restaurant was going to be really busy in about an hour and he couldn't risk having a delay taken up for a long measure by people who weren't "dining". Again I inquired into the definition of a "diner" vs a assort of four who wanted to order some small plates and lots of drinks and he was ambiguous. Finally I suggested that he lay us and should he need the delay in an hour he could ask us to move to the bar. I guess that was an acceptable solution and we were finally allowed to sit at one of the myriad alter tables in the place. As we sat the host suddenly became professional and told us to enjoy ourselves. We sat and ordered food and drinks and the floor staff proceeded to rush us through our time there at breakneck go. Dishes with small amounts of food on them were cleared without any inquiry as to whether we were finished (we weren't) and I had the.
